Systematic Theology Series: The Goodness of God
Recap from January 12, 2014
In December our Systematic Theology series led us to observe those attributes of God that showcase His unparalleled greatness. We noted from scripture that God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal, and unchangeable in His being as well as His attributes. And just a passing glance of his attributes of greatness reminds us that God is magnificent, transcendent, and incomprehensible! Indeed, our God is to be feared, revered, and worshiped!
But is He to be loved and trusted? Now that’s quite a different matter. If all that we knew about God was that He’s an almighty, all-powerful, all-sovereign, and all-knowing being, but we knew nothing of His character, we would not have good reason to love and trust Him. Scripture, however, is filled from cover to cover with thorough descriptions and vivid demonstrations of God’s wonderfully good nature!
On Sunday evening we spent our time highlighting many of the attributes that highlight God’s Goodness. First we took time demonstrating how these attributes are ones that are “communicable,” and thus ones that we are called to imitate in our own lives. We then listed the primary categories of God’s attributes of goodness, surveying some of the specific characteristics with scripture passages. Finally, we demonstrated the importance of viewing God’s attributes as included entities of His entire being that each operate fully and harmoniously in cooperation with each of His other attributes—even those that seem to starkly contrast others (e.g. God’s mercy and God’s wrath).
Our study concluded with a needed emphasis for each of us: that merely knowing about God’s greatness or even goodness systematically will never fully bring us to loving and trusting our good and great God. We must know God personally if we are truly to love and trust Him. May we grow deeply in that relationship this week and in this new year we’ve been graciously given!
The PowerPoint notes from our study are available below for download. If you happened to miss our study, you can still catch it by clicking the audio mp3 play button below. Join us again on February 2 as we continue our study in theology by discussing how scripture reveals God to us as an eternal triune God.
