A call to radical loyalty (Joshua 24) In preparation for a series on Daniel, Pastor Muri first examines a few texts from other places. This message endeavors to set Joshua 24 in its historical context and then to unpack the central challenge of this final chapter of Joshua’s record and his life. The message is a call for believers to affirm a deeply rooted loyalty to God that will affect all of life. The opening and closing illustration is Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah (a foreshadowing of the Daniel studies). For these three Hebrew youths, the fiery furnace was a mega- event. But the real story is in the event behind the event that prepared them for the event. They yielded up their bodies to serve no other god but their God (Daniel 3:28). That act of self-dedication calls us to imitate. Read Joshua 24 along with Daniel 3 and Romans 12:1–2.

The making of a man of God (Psalm 34) The text is Psalm 34 with 1 Samuel 17–22 and Psalm 56 serving up the background. David experiences some notable failures and grief while living in the fear of man. God uses these circumstances to teach him again to live in the fear of God alone. What he expresses in Psalm 34 is his renewed confidence in the God who is mighty to save those who trust in him. So the text calls us to exalt the Lord’s name together and learn to fear the Lord to the exclusion of the fear of man. Let’s hope for ongoing personal success in this area.
