“Do I really know him or her?” Maybe a childhood friend you’ve gotten back in touch with or a loved one who began acting out of character has caused you to at times ask this question. In our text, John wants each of us to know whether or not we’ve truly come to know God. John has identified in the first chapter both those who hold a false assurance of their salvation as well as those believers who struggle with an assurance that they are meant to have.
