"Were You There?" is an American spiritual that was likely written in the early 1800s. Each verse of the hymn almost puts the singer there, at that tragic event -- Were you there when they crucified my Lord? . . . Were you there when they nailed Him to the tree? . . . O sometimes it causes me to tremble! tremble! tremble! However, in the predetermined purposes of God, on the third day, the tragedy of the cross was overcome by the triumphant Resurrection!
